# WhatsApp chat to Excel

> Drop a WhatsApp chat export and download it as an Excel sheet or a CSV, one row per message. Your browser does the work, so the chat stays on your device.

**This free converter turns a WhatsApp chat export into an Excel file (.xlsx) and a CSV**, in your browser. Each message is one row, with its date, time, sender, text, media type and media file name, and a Hebrew chat opens right to left. Nothing is uploaded: it is a free tool from Circles, which connects your WhatsApp to your AI agent.

Your file never leaves your device. This page makes the spreadsheet in your browser, and nothing is uploaded.

Next time, find it by asking your AI. Circles connects ChatGPT, Claude or Instinct to the WhatsApp chats you choose. See how Circles works: https://usecircles.app/en?utm_source=tool&utm_medium=chat-to-excel

## How to export a WhatsApp chat

WhatsApp exports one chat at a time, from your phone. Without media is enough for a spreadsheet, and it is the smaller file.

1. **On an iPhone**: Open the chat, tap its name at the top, then **Export chat**. Choose **Without media** and save the .zip to Files, or AirDrop it to your computer.
2. **On an Android phone**: Open the chat, tap the three dots, then **More** and **Export chat**. Choose **Without media** and save the .txt to your files, or send it to yourself.
3. **Drop it above**: Drop the .zip or the .txt on the converter, or tap it to choose the file. Then download the .xlsx or the .csv. It works on a phone too.

## What is in the spreadsheet

One row for each message, in the order they were sent, under a header row with a filter.

| Column | What it holds |
| --- | --- |
| Date | The day the message was sent, as a real Excel date, so you can sort and filter by it |
| Time | The hour and minute it was sent |
| Sender | The name as your phone saved it, or the number |
| Message | The text, with all its lines in one cell. For a photo or a file, its caption |
| Media type | Photo, video, voice note, document, sticker or GIF, when the message is one |
| Media file | The file's name in the export, so you can find the photo or document in the .zip |

The lines WhatsApp writes itself, like "Dana added Avi" or a new group name, are left out. A deleted message keeps its row and says it was deleted. Edit marks are removed.

A chat written in Hebrew or Arabic opens right to left in Excel. The CSV is saved as UTF-8 with a byte-order mark, so Excel shows Hebrew as Hebrew. A message that starts like a formula (with = or +) stays text in the CSV.

## Your chat stays on your device

The converter is a small script that runs in your browser. It opens the file you choose, writes the spreadsheet on your device and hands it to you as a download. It never sends the file, or anything in it, to Circles or to anyone else. Once the page has loaded, it works with your internet switched off.

That is the same idea behind Circles itself: you decide which chats an AI gets to see. Read more on the [security page](https://usecircles.app/en/security).

## Questions and answers

### Is my chat uploaded anywhere?

No. Your browser reads the file and writes the spreadsheet on your device, and Circles never receives it. You can load the page, switch off your internet and the converter still works.

### Will Hebrew look right in Excel?

Yes. The .xlsx keeps Hebrew as it is and opens right to left when the chat is in Hebrew. The CSV carries the mark Excel looks for to read Hebrew, so it does not turn into question marks.

### Can I open it in Google Sheets or Numbers?

Yes. Open the .xlsx in Google Sheets (File, Import) or in Numbers, or import the .csv anywhere that reads CSV.

### Are the photos in the spreadsheet?

No. Each photo, video or voice note has its row, with its type and file name. The files themselves stay in the export's .zip, under that name. To see the chat with its photos, use the [chat to PDF tool](https://usecircles.app/en/tools/whatsapp-chat-to-pdf).

### Does it work for big groups?

Yes. A group with years of messages takes a few seconds. WhatsApp's own help says an export holds up to the latest 40,000 messages without media.

### How is this different from Circles?

The converter turns one export into a file, once. Circles connects your WhatsApp to your AI agent, so you can ask about the chats you choose any time, without exporting anything. See [Circles' plans](https://usecircles.app/en/pricing).
