# Summarize any WhatsApp group with the AI you already use

> Three hundred unread messages in the building group, half of them voice notes. Ask your agent what happened and get the decisions, the dates and the one question aimed at you, in a few lines.

**To summarize a WhatsApp group chat with AI, connect your agent to Circles** and ask it what you missed. Circles serves the groups you choose to Claude, ChatGPT, Instinct or Codex, with voice notes already transcribed and senders by name, so the agent reads the group and answers in seconds. Free for 2 chats, Pro $29 a month (₪99 in Israel) with 14 days free, as of October 2026.

## Try asking

Copy one, change the group name, and send it to your agent.

- **"What did I miss in the building committee group since Sunday?"**: Decisions, dates and open questions, in a few lines.
- **"Summarize the parents group from today. Skip the thank-yous."**: Good for groups where most messages are reactions to one real message.
- **"Which of my groups had real news since yesterday? One line each."**: The agent checks which chats moved first, then reads only those.
- **"Did anyone in the team group ask me something this week?"**: Finds questions aimed at you, including ones asked in voice notes.
- **"What did the committee finally decide about the elevator repair, and who disagreed?"**: Follows a long thread to its ending, with names.
- **"List everything I need to do from the family group this week."**: Turns a chat into a to-do list you can paste anywhere.

## An example exchange

Invented people and an invented group, shortened. This is the shape of a real answer.

**You:** What did I miss in the Building 12 committee group since Sunday?

**Agent:** 64 messages since Sunday, 11 of them voice notes. What matters:

- **Elevator repair approved.** Avi got two quotes; the group chose the second one. Work starts November 4, the elevator is out for two days.
- **Payment.** Each apartment pays its share by November 1. Dana posted the bank details in a voice note on Monday.
- **A question for you.** Yossi asked (voice note, Tuesday) if you can let the technician into the roof on the 4th. Nobody answered yet.
- Everything else was scheduling the next meeting: Thursday at 20:00, in the lobby.

## Why it is fast and cheap

An agent that reads every message in every group to answer "what did I miss?" burns its whole turn on scrolling. Circles splits the job in two.

1. **activity: what moved, with no text**: One call returns each open chat that has new messages since a time, with a count, the last time and the last sender. No message text, so it costs almost nothing, and the agent knows where to look.
2. **catch_up: only the chats that matter**: The agent then reads just those groups, oldest first, senders already turned into names, voice notes already turned into text. One chat at a time, or several grouped in one call.

This is what `activity` hands the agent before it reads a single message (invented chats):

```
{
  "chats": [
    { "chat": "Building 12 committee", "new_messages": 64, "last_at_iso": "2026-10-27T05:48:00.000Z", "last_from": "Avi" },
    { "chat": "Oak Street parents", "new_messages": 112, "last_at_iso": "2026-10-27T06:20:00.000Z", "last_from": "Dana" },
    { "chat": "Family", "new_messages": 9, "last_at_iso": "2026-10-26T19:02:00.000Z", "last_from": "Mom" }
  ]
}
```

## What Circles prepares for the agent

- **Voice notes as text.** Transcribed automatically, Hebrew and English, inside the message. A group where people mostly send voice notes is summarized like any other. [More on voice notes](https://usecircles.app/en/use-cases/voice-note-transcription).
- **Senders by name.** Senders come back by the name you saved, so the summary says "Dana".
- **Files announced by name.** A PDF in the group appears by name and size; the agent opens it only if the summary needs it.
- **Edits and deletions applied.** An edited message reads as its new text; a message deleted for everyone is gone from what the agent sees.
- **Full history.** "What did we decide in March?" works too, as far back as WhatsApp synced to your linked device.

## Circles or Meta AI summaries?

WhatsApp has its own AI summaries. They are a fine choice for some people, and here is the honest difference as of October 2026.

| | Meta AI in WhatsApp | Your agent with Circles |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Price | Free, built in | Free for 2 chats, Pro $29 a month, plus your agent |
| Where it runs | Inside WhatsApp | In the agent you already use: Claude, ChatGPT, Instinct, Codex |
| What it summarizes | Unread messages, rolling out by language and region | Any open chat, any time range, including full history |
| Doing something with it | Stays in WhatsApp | The agent can add it to your calendar, a doc or an email with its other tools |
| Who decides access | WhatsApp's own settings, including Advanced Chat Privacy per chat | You, per chat; hidden chats do not exist for agents |

Meta AI wins on price and on being official. Circles wins when you want your own agent to read your groups and act on them. The longer comparison: [Meta AI summaries vs your own agent](https://usecircles.app/en/compare/meta-ai-summaries).

## Agents that do this best

- **[Instinct](https://usecircles.app/en/agents/instinct)**: Ask "what did the parents group decide?" in a WhatsApp message. The answer comes back there.
- **[Claude](https://usecircles.app/en/agents/claude)**: Handles a month of a busy group in one go and can open the PDFs people posted.
- **[ChatGPT](https://usecircles.app/en/agents/chatgpt)**: Ask for a catch-up next to the rest of your day in ChatGPT.

## Open only the groups you want summarized

Each chat in Circles is hidden, read, or read and send. For summaries, **read** is all you need: the agent can read and search there, and there is no way to send. Set everything else to hidden and it does not exist for agents, not in lists, not in search, not even named in a refusal. Every request is in your activity log. ## Questions and answers

### How can I summarize a busy WhatsApp group with AI?

Connect your agent (Claude, ChatGPT, Instinct, Codex) to Circles, open the group for reading, and ask "what did I miss since Sunday?". Circles serves the group with voice notes as text and senders by name.

### What is the best way to catch up on 500 unread group messages?

Ask for decisions, dates and questions aimed at you. With Circles the agent first checks which chats moved and how much, then reads only those.

### Can ChatGPT summarize a WhatsApp chat without exporting it?

Yes, with Circles. ChatGPT connects to Circles with one address and reads the chats you chose directly, so there is no export file to make or upload each time.

### Does the summary include voice notes?

Yes. Circles transcribes voice notes automatically, Hebrew and English, and the text arrives inside each message, so the agent summarizes what was said too.

### Can the agent summarize a group without being able to post in it?

Yes. Open the group as *read* in Circles: the agent can read and search it, and has no way to send there.

### How is this different from Meta AI summaries in WhatsApp?

Meta AI is free and built in. Circles lets your own agent read any chat you open, over any time range, and use the result with its other tools, free for 2 chats or $29 a month on Pro.
