Circles vs exporting chats

Circles vs exporting a WhatsApp chat to ChatGPT: a snapshot, or a live connection

WhatsApp can export any chat as a file, and you can upload that file to ChatGPT or Claude. It is free and it works. It is also one chat, one moment, with voice notes the AI cannot read. Here is how to do it well, and when a live connection is worth paying for.

Export the chat if you have a one-off question about one conversation: it is free, official and touches no third-party service. Choose Circles if you ask often, across several chats, or about voice notes and files: your agent reads the chats you choose live, with voice notes as text, on Free, Starter $9.90 or Pro $29 a month (as of October 2026).

How to export a WhatsApp chat to ChatGPT or Claude

  1. Open the chat on your phone

A group or a personal chat.

  2. Choose Export chat

From the chat's menu. WhatsApp offers it with or without media and gives you a .txt file, or a .zip with media. The exact menu path differs between Android and iPhone; WhatsApp's help page shows the current one.

  3. Upload it to the AI

Attach the .txt (or what is in the .zip) to a new ChatGPT or Claude conversation, and ask your question.

Tip: export without media when you only need the text. The file is smaller, and voice notes would not be transcribed anyway.

What an export cannot do

  • It is a snapshot. Tomorrow's messages are not in it; you export again.
  • One chat at a time. "What did all my groups decide this week?" means many exports.
  • Voice notes stay audio, or become placeholders. The AI reads only the text around them.
  • Media only for recent messages. Older photos and documents are left out.
  • No follow-through. The AI cannot check a chat again later, or reply where you allowed it.

Where exporting is the better choice

  • Free.
  • Official, with no ban risk from WhatsApp's side. It uses no linked device and no unofficial client, and stays inside WhatsApp's terms.
  • Nothing stays connected. The AI sees one file you chose, once.
  • Perfect for a one-off: summarising a finished trip-planning group, or pulling the decisions out of an old project chat.

If that is your need, export. Honestly.

Where Circles is the better choice

  • Live. Ask today about this morning, with nothing to re-export.
  • Every chat you open, searchable together, with activity for "what moved since yesterday?".
  • Voice notes as text, Hebrew and English, inside each message.
  • Files on request, including older ones fetched from your phone when asked.
  • Replies where you allow them, within a daily cap.

The trade-off: Circles links your number as an unofficial linked device, which is outside WhatsApp's terms. An export stays inside them. Circles reads by default, caps sends and never broadcasts.

Questions and answers

Can I export a WhatsApp chat to ChatGPT?

Yes. Export the chat from WhatsApp as a .txt (or a .zip with media) and upload it to ChatGPT. It is a one-time snapshot of one chat, and voice notes are not transcribed.

Does ChatGPT read voice notes in an exported chat?

Not as text: the export carries voice notes as audio files or placeholders. Circles transcribes voice notes automatically, Hebrew and English, so your agent reads what was said.

Is there a limit to a WhatsApp export?

Media is included only for the most recent messages; the limit is commonly cited as about 10,000 messages with media. Circles keeps full history for the chats you open.

Is exporting safer than connecting WhatsApp to AI?

From WhatsApp's side, yes: an export uses no linked device and no unofficial client. Circles connects as an unofficial linked device, which WhatsApp's terms do not authorise, and is careful by default.

How do I let ChatGPT read my WhatsApp without exporting?

Connect ChatGPT to Circles: paste one address as a custom connector and approve on Circles' page. ChatGPT then reads the chats you choose, live.
