Circles vs automation platforms

Circles vs Zapier, Make, n8n, Pipedream and Composio: personal WhatsApp

Automation platforms connect thousands of apps, and each has a WhatsApp integration. All of the native ones use the WhatsApp Business API, so none of them can read the chats on your phone. Here is why, and how to bring your personal chats into a workflow anyway.

Choose Zapier, Make, n8n, Pipedream or Composio for workflows across thousands of apps on a WhatsApp Business number. Choose Circles when the workflow needs your personal WhatsApp: their native integrations are Business API only, and Circles serves your own chats over MCP and an HTTP API that n8n (or any tool with an HTTP step) can call, on Free, Starter $9.90 or Pro $29 a month (as of October 2026).

Why automation platforms cannot read your personal WhatsApp

Platforms like Zapier and Make connect only through official APIs, and the only official WhatsApp API is Meta's Business Platform. It works with a business number, starts empty apart from up to six months of one-to-one history that Meta's Coexistence onboarding can import (groups are not covered), and has no way to read the chats, groups or history on a personal phone. Make's older WhatsApp connections were deprecated in March 2026 after Meta tightened its rules for tech providers.

So the answer to "can Zapier read my WhatsApp group?" is no. The API Zapier uses does not see personal chats. More on the Business API.

How n8n can use Circles' API

Circles serves the chats you open over a plain HTTP API with a key, so any workflow tool with a generic HTTP request step can read them. n8n is the common case.

  1. Create a token in Circles

In Circles, on the Agents page, choose New token, name it (for example "n8n") and pick the API. The token is shown once; keep it only in n8n's credentials.

  2. Add an HTTP Request node

Point it at https://app.usecircles.app/api/v1/agent/activity or https://app.usecircles.app/api/v1/agent/catch_up with a since time, and an Authorization: Bearer header with your token.

  3. Use the answer

Messages come back with names resolved and voice notes as text, so the next node (a summary step, a sheet, an email) can use them as they are.

The full reference is the OpenAPI document at https://app.usecircles.app/api/openapi.json. If a workflow sends, keep in mind that Circles never retries a send, and the workflow should not either: turn off automatic retries on any step that sends, so one message is never posted twice. Sending also needs the chat open for sending, within the daily cap.

Where the automation platforms are the better choice

  • Thousands of apps. Workflows that touch CRMs, sheets, calendars and payment tools. Circles does one job: it connects WhatsApp to agents.
  • Official messaging to customers on a Business number, with templates and Meta's terms on your side.
  • Free tiers, such as Composio's Hobby plan with 100,000 tool calls.

Where Circles is the better choice

  • Your personal chats. Circles serves the chats you open. These platforms cannot see them natively.
  • Hosted for you. n8n's community route means hosting Evolution API or WAHA yourself. Circles is hosted.
  • Agent-ready output. Voice notes as text, files on request, senders by name.
  • Per-chat permissions and a send cap that apply to every workflow and agent together.

Same terms for both. Circles, like every tool that reads a personal number, connects as an unofficial linked device, which is outside WhatsApp's terms. No one can promise WhatsApp will never disconnect a device. What Circles offers is careful defaults: reading by default, sending off until you allow it, a daily cap, no broadcast, and a dedicated IP address shared with no other customer. It makes no claim to a safer protocol. How Circles handles your chats.

Questions and answers

Can Zapier read my personal WhatsApp?

No. Zapier's WhatsApp integration requires a WhatsApp Business Account, and a personal number will not work, as of October 2026. Circles serves your personal chats over MCP and an HTTP API.

Can n8n connect to a personal WhatsApp number?

Its native node is Business Cloud only. A community node for Evolution API or WAHA can reach a personal number if you host one. Or call Circles' HTTP API with an HTTP Request node.

Can Make read WhatsApp groups?

Make's WhatsApp app is the Business Cloud API, which cannot read the groups on your personal phone. Circles can, for the groups you open.

Does Composio have a WhatsApp MCP for personal numbers?

Composio's WhatsApp toolkit is built on the Business API (WABA, phone number ID, templates). Circles is a WhatsApp MCP for your personal number.

Can a workflow send WhatsApp messages through Circles?

Yes, only in chats you opened for sending and within the daily cap. Circles never retries a send automatically; set the workflow not to retry either.
